Tamilnadu Newsprint and Papers Ltd. (TNPL) has awarded as Winner for “13th Cycle of Quality Council of India (QCI) – D.L. Shah Quality Award “for the year 2020 by National Board for Quality Promotion (NBQP) during 3rd Virtual Quality Conclave (VQC) on the theme of “Commitment to Quality-Sustaining a Culture of Improvement” on 17th December 2020. NBQP functioning as quality promotion board of Quality Council of India, which is an autonomous body under Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India.
About Quality Council of India (QCI) – D.L. Shah Quality Award (QCI-DLSQA):
Quality Council of India (QCI) – D.L. Shah Quality Award (project-based) was launched in 2007 and is positioned PAN-India for the recognition of successful projects of an organization that have resulted in continuous improvement of processes, products and/or services, better/effective operations and increased customers/stakeholders satisfaction. The awards are given for specific projects which have to be submitted in the form of case studies supported by adequate evidence in the form of documents or video clips. The Award today stands as one of the most coveted Awards across nation. Started in 2007, every year these Awards are given to the outstanding projects of establishments within India who have ensured continuous improvement in three aspects, namely, Operations and processes, Products and/or services, Customers’/stakeholders’ satisfaction.
Invitation from NBQP for Application Submission for Quality Council of India (QCI) – D.L. Shah Quality Award:
Under the Awards 13TH cycle, for the year 2020, NBQP Secretariat invited the applications from any Govt. Enterprises, manufacturing industries, Service sectors such as Infrastructure (Road, Transport, etc.), Financial Service sectors such as Banking, Insurance, etc., Hospitality, IT/IT’es, Pharmaceuticals, HealthCare, Education, MSME, PSU, NGO and other sectors.

TNPL has participated in the category of Project Based 13th Cycle of Quality Council of India (QCI) – D.L. Shah Quality Award (QCI-DLSQA) and submitted the questionnaire as required by the NBQP.
Award review parameters/criteria:
The assessment of the projects has been made on the basis of various parameters which have been identified by a team of experts from NBQP/QCI and D.L. Shah Trust. Emphasis has placed on the key parameters such as Problem/solution clarity, Ingenuity and Innovation in approach, Data source and collection, Technical approach, Team working, Diagnosis of the problem (root cause analysis & quality tools deployed), Benchmarking used in the project, Impact of the project: tangible benefits, intangible benefits, socio economic, environmental benefits, Sustainability of the project and Standardization & Horizontal deployment.
The applications were assessed on an exhaustive set of above self-assessment parameters. TNPL’s project has undergone five stages of assessment via Stage 1: Online Application, Stage 2: Preliminary Screening- Document Assessment, Stage 3: Project Presentation at QCI office, New Delhi, Stage 4: Site Verification for project implementation, Stage 5: Final Selection and communication. Due to prevailing COVID-9, Stage 4 was done over online virtual platform by NBQP.
The applicant scoring the highest, among each of the respective Industrial Sectors, was finally recommended to the Jury for final selection. Finally, TNPL won 13TH Cycle of Quality Council of India (QCI) – D.L. Shah Quality Award under Silver Category for the project titled “Sustainable Agro Based (Bagasse) Operations at TNPL”.
It is to be noted that this award from NBQP of QCI under Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India is the first time award of TNPL after thirty five (35) years of operation since 1985.
